Digimarc in $4.5M deal to drop Arbitron suit

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Digimarc Corp. said Tuesday it is licensing a portion of its technology patents to Arbitron Inc. for $4.5 million, settling a legal dispute over Arbitron’s new “Portable People Meter.”

Digimarc shares surged to a new 52-week high of $22 before settling back to $20.89 in morning trading, up 11 percent. Arbitron shares rose 2 cents to $25.49.

Digimarc, which makes drivers’ licenses and other secure identification cards, sued Arbitron in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware last year, claiming the people meter — Arbitron’s new method for measuring radio audiences — infringes on nine of its patents.

The agreement announced Tuesday expires at the end of 2021.
