The exciting news is the new six-core Core i7-970, which Intel is going to sell for $885 sometime this month.Additionally, there’s a big price cut for the Core i7-950 which is supposed to be launched in August — from $562 to $294. Two other new chips are also going to be released this month–the Core i5-760 ($205) and the Core i5-870S. The last one is notable for being exclusively for small-form-factor PCs with a higher price tag of $351. Also, the low performance CPU like Core i3-540, Pentium E5500 and E6600 will see small price cut.
Intel is also expected to launch lower-end processors in August with two new Pentiums E5700 and E6800 with a price tag $75 and $86 respectively, a new Core i3-560 ($138), and even a new Celeron (the $53 E3500). There is going to be more price cut in October for Core i3-550, Pentium E5700 and E6700 and Celeron E3400. However, there is no cut for Core i5 and i7 CPUs. It appears to be that Intel slashed the price for low end processors in order to stay more competitive with AMD. Further, the company didn’t yet kill the Pentium and Celeron brands for the desktop.
