Prince Charles’ love letters on sale in Ebay

TORONTO - After the Gandhi memorabilia, love letters written by Prince Charles to a Canadian woman 30 years ago are now on sale. Up on eBay, the six love letters open their auction with a minimum bid of $30,000.

Charles had written these letters to Montreal’s Janet Jenkins after their 1975 encounter at the British consulate there in 1975. The Canadian woman worked at the British mission at that time. Written in 1976 and 1980 during his bachelor days before his engagement to Diana, the letters are written on royal stationary with a crest, coat of arms, palace or castle name.

The local media reported Alicia Carroll, who owns Los Angeles-based Everything Royal and is selling the letters, as saying that the letters reveal Charles’ deep affection for Janet.

says. In a letter dated June 8, 1980, the prince talks about the pressure on him to get married at earliest.

‘I can see that I shall just have to get married as soon as possible and then all these people might relax a little…! I still think my solution of marrying a girl from each commonwealth country is the best one,” Prince Charles writes.

Assuring his Canadian lover, the prince continues, ‘Don’t worry - whatever happens I will make sure you are given early warning.” And he signs off ‘with much love, Charles.”

The auctioneer told the Canadian Press Friday that Janet contacted her through Hello Magazine in July 2002, saying that she had some precious letters from Prince Charles to sell.

She said she bought the letters after lengthy negotiation, and tried to auction them once earlier but stopped after objections by Janet. She said, ‘I’m sorry she (Janet) is embarrassed because there is nothing embarrassing in the letters.

‘Prince Charles was not married when he wrote her the letters and they’re not about Janet - they are about letters written by the future king of England.

‘They are historically significant no matter what is in the letters. They’re written by the future king. They are as important historically as a note written by Abraham Lincoln.” She said she had offers from people to buy these letters but she won’t sell them for less than $30,000.

A small word of advice, don’t keep your love letters around. Who knows who will sell them after you are long dead? Personally I wouldn’t take Prince Charles’ love letter even if I was given a million dollars with it as gift, but that’s me.
