Random Digilante

Forums like blogs are incessantly plagued by forum spammers who often use a fully automated bot like xrumer to spam your forum with product insertions and sales pitch unrelated to the topic of the forum thereby diluting the quality and user experience. Weeding out the spammers can often be very time consuming and frustrating. Now you have a new friend in your fight against forum spammers - A Random Digilante.
Random Digilante uses an innovative approach to warn forum administrators about forum spammers. He takes over the free email accounts used by the forum spammer and then sets up a auto-responder message to forum administrators when such accounts are used to register new accounts at different forums around the world. The effectiveness of this approach relies on forum spammers re-using the same free email address (like GMail and Hotmail) to spam multiple forums.

Often I had such messages and used to wonder about the true intentions of the Random Digilante. However after reading his blog I realized that he is a good friend of forum moderators worldwide. So on behalf of Taragana Forums, thank you Random Digilante.

You can read his blog for full details on what he does and I have to say his techniques are very effective though not sufficient by itself. Apparently he is not the only one in the crusade against spammers. We still need many more random digilante’s to fight against forum spammers.

I’m sure “Random Digilante” thinks he’s doing the world a service, and maybe he is, but he’s doing it in a very irresponsible fashion.
By continually creating random accounts on blogs and discussion forums, he’s addressing what HE THINKS is a hole in forum software, pitching what HE THINKS is the _only_ way to fix it. There’s no way to contact him to point out the error of his ways. He’s like an unguided missile that just keeps on going.
By addressing the problem in the way he has, he’s become as bad as the spammers he professes to be against.
