Summary Box: AT&T earnings, network fixes
THE NUMBERS: AT&T said Thursday it earned $3 billion, or 51 cents per share, in the last three months of 2009. That was up 26 percent from the same period of 2008 and matched the average forecast of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. Revenue fell 0.7 percent to $30.9 billion, also matching expectations.
LOOKING AHEAD: AT&T said it would spend $2 billion more than last year on improving its wireless network. The company wants to end complaints about the range and consistency of its network, especially from iPhone users.
APPLE RELATIONS: Apple and AT&T haven’t said how much time remains in their exclusive contract. Apple announced Wednesday that AT&T will be the sole U.S. data carrier for its new iPad computer, but the iPhone still could come out with another carrier, such as Verizon, later in the year.
