THE LAWSUIT: Patent-holding company NTP Inc. files patent-infringement cases against Apple Inc., Google Inc., Microsoft Corp., HTC Corp., Motorola Inc. and LG Electronics Inc.
THE HISTORY: NTP is the same company that won a patent settlement of more than $600 million from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd.
THE FUTURE: Changes in court practices have reduced NTP’s power to win large settlements, so if NTP prevails, it’s likely to receive much less this time from each defendant.
