Summary Box: Facebook Places and privacy
WHAT? Facebook has launched a feature called Places, which lets users “check in” to restaurants or stores using their smart phones so their friends know they are there.
WHO? Only a small fraction of Americans use these types of applications, but the number is likely to grow. Many people worry about the privacy implications of letting people know where they are, digitally.
SETTINGS: You can adjust the privacy settings of Places through Facebook’s regular privacy page. And remember that Facebook won’t track where you are unless you actively “check in” to a place or have a friend do it for you.
