Total Security Solution for Windows Computers
By Angsuman Chakraborty, Gaea News NetworkMonday, February 6, 2006
This is a short list of highly recommended free softwares for total protection of your Windows PC (Computers with Windows Operating System).
It protects you from Spyware, Adware, Malware, Virus, Trojans, Spam etc. They can be set to automatically update from the internet and keep your protection uptodate always.
I personally use(d) each of them and I am satisfied with their quality.
1 | Anti-Virus | AVG Free Edition | Continuously protects your computers against viruses, trojans and malware |
2 | Firewall | Free Zone Alarm | Protects your computer from unauthorized external or internal accesses. It effectively puts a shield (firewall) around your computer. |
3 | Anti-Spyware | Ad-Aware | Protects your computer against spyware, adware and malware. Ad Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy complements each other. In combination they provide much wider coverage than acting individually. |
4 | Spybot Search & Destroy
5 | Anti-Spam | SpamBayes | It is based on (naive) bayesian theory. It learns quickly from your preferences (spam or not-spam) and is over 95% accurate. The Outlook Addin integrates nicely with Microsoft Outlook (2000 / 2002(XP) / 2003) software. It doesn’t work for Outlook Express or other email clients like Pegasus. |
6 | POPFile | Automatic email classification based on naive bayesian theory. Works for all email clients. More scalable than SpamBayes but slightly less user-friendly than SpamBayes Outlook Addin. It is not limited to spam-ham classification.
7 | Safe Internet Browser | Firefox | Firefox is faster, safer and much more powerful than Internet Explorer. It protects against several strains of viruses, trojans and adware which affects Internet Explorer. |
Note: You can also use the ZoneAlarm(R) Internet Security Suite 6 for one-stop solution to all your computer security needs.
Note 2: The provided executables are latest as of today.

Anti-Spyware: I run Spybot Search and Destroy and Grisoft’s (formerly Ewido) anti-spyware available from the same place as their AVG anti-virus: https://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 Browsers: Opera (for performance and sheer usefulness in organizing research thanks to some killer features) and Firefox (for sites which Opera doesn’t run) Anti-spam: GMAIL |

Microsoft’s Antispyware will not be free very soon. Also it is a beta product from Microsoft. Need I say more I just looked at your post. I noticed you didn’t recommend any anti-spam solution or browser. Any thoughts? |

Good one…very close to my recent recommendations on how to protect a Windows PC for free: I simply replaced Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware (which has been going downhill for a long time in my opinion) with Microsoft Antispyware. |
