BMC Software posts 3Q earnings jump, ups outlook
HOUSTON — BMC Software Inc. said Wednesday its fiscal third-quarter earnings jumped 32 percent, fueled in part by increases in the business software maker’s licensing and maintenance revenue.
The company also hiked its forecast for the full year.
BMC said it earned $110.7 million, or 59 cents a share, compared with $83.8 million, or 44 cents a share, in the prior-year period. Excluding special items, profit came to $142 million, or 76 cents a share, in the latest period.
Total revenue rose 4 percent to $508.1 million. Licensing revenue jumped 12 percent, while maintenance rose 1.8 percent and professional services revenue fell 20 percent.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of 68 cents a share, on revenue of $493.1 million. Analysts’ estimates typically exclude one-time items.
Total bookings climbed 18 percent to $539 million.
For fiscal 2010, BMC said it expects earnings per share of $2.64 to $2.72, excluding items, up from a previous forecast of $2.55 to $2.65 per share.
Analysts are expecting $2.61 a share, on average.
Shares fell 30 cents to close at $37.24 on Wednesday before the company released its earnings.
