First consumer devices for Mobile DTV debut
LAS VEGAS — The prospect of live, local TV shows on cell phones and other portable devices is getting closer. Manufacturers this week are showing off gadgets that can receive a new type of digital TV transmissions.
“Mobile DTV” gadgets are due to be tested this spring by consumers in the Washington, D.C., area. The devices include a cell phone made by Samsung Electronics Co. and a Dell Inc. laptop.
The devices are on display at the International Consumer Electronics show this week in Las Vegas.
About 30 stations are already broadcasting Mobile DTV signals, but only prototype devices have been able to receive them.
