Summary Box: Microsoft 3Q net income up 35 pct
THE NUMBERS: Microsoft Corp. earned $4.01 billion, or 45 cents per share, on $14.5 billion in revenue. The world’s largest software maker beat Wall Street’s expectations on both measures.

THE RESPONSE: Investors looking for a stronger signal that businesses were spending on technology again were disappointed in the server group’s 2 percent rise in revenue, among other things, and sent shares down after hours.
