Time To Move Beyond Web 2.0

O’ Reilly initially coined the term Web 2.0 which came to symbolize newer breed of rich web applications - tags, ajax enabled and the works. Now is the time to move even further beyond Web 2.0 as a serious flaw of Web 2.0 has emerged.

It appears that O’ Reilly media has a “pending application for registration of Web 2.0 as a service mark…”. Even the pending application in US boldened O’ Reilly so much that they decided to issue a cease and desist letter to IT@Cork for hosting a Web 2.0 conference in Ireland!

I somehow missed the news earlier. As it stands I think we are likely to see O’ Reilly media increasingly asserting its authority over the word - “Web 2.0″. I think that warrants we as a developer community shun the word “Web 2.0″ altogether in favor of something free (via copyleft?) like say Web 3.0 or Web NG, where NG stands for next generation. Anything to get away from Web 2.0 shackles imposed by O’ Reilly media.
