Blogging has reigned the web for almost a decade and now it has given rise to a new generation of concise blogging a.k.a. microblogging. Typically the microblogs are 140-150 character updates published to be viewed by anyone, a limited group, or a targeted person. These messages can be in the form of text, IM, email, MP3 or the web. It has emerged as one of the popular ways to dole out messages to the targeted audience. Microblogging is being increasing used by blogger and advertisers to hype their stuffs. Twitter has become almost synonymous to microblogging and immensely popular. Most of you know about Twitter, but there are some cool microblogging sites down the line that are equally high on features and prospect. In fact I found a number of corporate Twitter-alikes that have just begun. Let’s have a look at the top 10 microblogging sites other than twitter.
1. FriendFeed
This microblogging site is close on the heals of Twitter, it’s a real time aggregator that combines the best of instant messaging and microblogging. It consolidates the updates from social bookmarking websites, blogs and micro-blogging, social media and social networking websites.
2. Tumblr
This is again a Twitter rival with tumblelogs. The tumblelogs are short blogs, or media posts over elaborate editorial posts related to blogging. The tumblelogs include links, photos, quotes, dialogues, and video.
3. Plurk
This is a free social networking and microblogging service. Through this service you can send updates(plurks ) in the form of short messages and links. It is a social journal for general public.

This microblogging site features a smooth and intuitive interface, including more Web 2.0 components than twitter. With Jaiku’s mobile component you can instantly inform your coworkers what you’re doing. It closely resembles Twitter except that it allows smaller size limit for posts than Twitter.
4. Yammer
This is an excellent microblogging tool for coworkers in any company or organization. The coworkers in Yammer frequently exchange short answers to one simple question what are you working on. Through Yammer co-workers can discuss ideas, ask questions, post news, and share links and related information.

This is an open standard that allows users on different micro-blogging services to communicate with each other. This inter-operation leads to federation of new communities.

Pownce was indeed Shutdown Dec, 2008 Schmownce was then created by doods in San Jose, Calif and Austin, TX but Some people (including myself) are having problems logging in — It worked fine for the first few months but then just blah Im on VOX now lol |
