I have seen and also well documented that Windows slows down with large number of files on your Desktop. I have observed the same for Linux too. The most likely reason is Windows caches the Desktop related resources in memory which can affect your performance negatively when are too many items on your Desktop.

The trick is to create a folder on your Desktop and name it say “Old Desktop” or something similar and move all your Desktop files and folder to it. For obvious reasons don’t include the same folder too. Now you have a clean Desktop and you will surely get better performance.
It may happen that you find frequently going back to the old Desktop to get some frequently accessed program. In that you can create shortcut to it from your Desktop.
