Google, the company with more than 1 million servers, is trying to go green. To keep Google’s services and tools running, it takes extensive computer infrastructure and massive amounts of electricity. It is certainly encouraging to know that they are trying to build a clean energy future minimizing their impact on the earth’s climate. Let me tell you about their plans.
- Google has pledged to remain carbon neutral
- They are taking steps to help their employees become greener and at least conscious of the fact. Their program includes
- biodiesel shuttles
- Green design elements
- GFleet
- locally grown food
- A self-powered commuter program
- A residential solar program
- Bikes on campus
- They are also providing users with green tools such as maps to green businesses to help live greener, healthier, and more sustainable lives. If you haven’t seen them yet, you will, soon.
- Google will announce a free web service tomorrow called PowerMeter that’ll let users track energy consumption in their homes or business, provided there’s a means to upload the data.
- Google uses about 0.0003 kWh of energy to answer your average search query. And mind you, there are several CPUs under process to to do one single query at that time. It still is less than your computer’s power consumption for the same amount of time.
