Yes. this isn’t any hoax and it is true. According to browser vulnerability research by Secunia, (PDF) 115 security vulnerabilities in Firefox were reported in 2008—nearly twice as many as IE and Apple Safari combined. Wait, don’t just close your Firefox yet. I can assure you that its still better amongst the worse ones. Firefox, despite having so many vulnerabilities, patches them twice as fast as Microsoft does.
Through this research we get to know that amongst browser plug-ins, Microsoft Active X leaves others miles behind in case of security risks. As you can see in the screen-shot below, the report says Active X has 366 loopholes to Firefox’s 1. And that should settle you to go for apps more freely.
What is interesting is, see, though firefox has so many security glitches, they are hardly critical. And Microsoft on the other hand, has less number of headaches but serious ones. Also, depsite having so many issues Firefox patches them thrice as fast as Microsoft does.
So, there is nothing to be alarmed as yet. But, keep your eyes open. And this research just tells us that perhaps web browsers need to undergo a serious upgradation to match the way web 3.0 is approaching. Because for now, we just can’t be satisfied with best web browser having 110 vulnerabilities. What do you think? Mozilla Firefox 4 may just be the answer.
