IBM to buy software maker Initiate Systems

ARMONK, N.Y. — IBM Corp. said Wednesday it will acquire Initiate Systems, a company that makes software for sharing data among health care and government organizations.

IBM did not say how much it will pay for the privately held company, which is based in Chicago.

It said the deal will allow IBM to offer a cheaper and more efficient way to share medical histories and other data across organizations.

IBM shares fell 34 cents to $125.19.
