Summary Box: Cable providers try to play nice

CUSTOMERS’ REVENGE: Cable TV companies are trying to treat their customers better.

THE STEPS: Some companies are offering 30-day money-back guarantees and putting orders in writing. Soon subscribers might be able to set specific times for technician visits.

WHY NOW: Cable companies lost subscribers overall in 2009. Some left for satellite TV service and some unplugged pay TV service altogether to watch video online.
