Summary Box: Duel pits Microsoft-Yahoo vs. Google
THE BREAKTHROUGH: Government regulators in the U.S. and Europe approved an Internet search partnership that Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. proposed nearly seven months ago.
THE DEAL: Microsoft will process search requests on Yahoo’s Web site for the next 10 years.
THE INCENTIVES: Microsoft is counting on the deal to expand its share of the Internet’s lucrative search market, which has long been dominated by Google Inc. Yahoo will keep 88 percent of the revenue from search ads on its site while lowering its expenses.
