Can Google Nexus One Beat iPhone?

Google announced Nexus One phone on Tuesday. It has a 3.7-inch AMOLED, HVGA display and runs on Android 2.1 on 1GHz Snapdragon Qualcomm processor. The phone is 22.5 mm thick and weighs 130g. The android phone is expected to break the complete control of Apple iPhone in the smartphone market. While the iPhone remains the market leader in the mobile world, speed is a crucial deciding factor for smartphones, the Nexus One is the latest challenger to iPhone market.
Android is considered as a major breakthrough in cellphones because, it offers an “open” operating system. The other companies could use and design applications using Android. But, iPhone comes with proprietary operating system.
Nexus One includes with 1 GHz Snapdragon processor which is considered to be superfast. The iPhone 3GS, where the ‘S’ stands for speed, has a 600 MHz processor. So, clearly Nexus One has edge over iPhone in terms of speed.
Nexus One comes with a price tag of $180 with a two-year contract with T-Mobile or $530 unlocked. If you sign a contract with AT & T, the price of iPhone is $199 or $599 depending on storage capacity. So, Nexus One has some advantages, pricewise.
As per the latest marketing slogan of iPhone, it can support 10,0000 apps whereas Nexus One can support only 12,000 apps. So, Google is far behind of iPhone in terms of Application game.
Nexus One is a direct challenge to Apple’s hugely successful iPhone, which, despite being over 3 years old, still cannot support multitasking. In fact, users of Android-based devices can do lots of things on their Android handsets that they are unable to do on an iPhone: say, for example running applications in the background, allowing them to get instant alerts whenever a friend updates their Facebook page or Twitter profile; listening to music on while writing an email; and threading conversations by person etc.
Nexus One also provides of higher memory speed (512MB RAM) than iPhone (256MB RAM), better WiFi support and it comes with a microUSB port. Nexus One’s browser will support Javascript and Flash-based webpages but iPhone browser does not.
Nexus One offers a larger screen (a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen with 800×480 pixel resolution display and better camera , while iPhone includes 3.5-inch capacitive multitouch screen with 480×320 pixel resolution display). Additionally, unlike iPhone which offers internal storage, Nexus One has a microSD card slot (expandable up to 32GB and will ship with 4GB card).

My immediate answer is no. Unless Google is able to find a way to make developers rich like Apple has. The iPhone is so appealing because there are so many 3rd party apps being made, because developers can become millionaires. Google needs to do this. |

Dipankar, you failed to include a couple of points. Google has no direct customer support program in place. Customers are experiencing a slew of problems with the Nexus One with no available support from Google or T-Mobile. The only option customers have is to email Google and wait for a response within two days. T-Mobile has informed they have no support documents or training on the Nexus One and are referring customers back to Google. On the contrary iPhone customers have a multitude of support options from both Apple retail stores, phone support & the thousands of AT&T locations all with knowledgeable employees. It’s quite mind boggling a company of the size and magnitude as Google would launch a new to market product with absolutely no support plan in place. Google you FAIL! |
