Summary Box: Twitter now accepting paid tweets

PARROTING GOOGLE: Much like search engines that have sponsored messages atop the results they display, Twitter is beginning to let companies pay to have their “tweets” show up first in searches on its site.

EARLY STEP: It’s not clear how much money Twitter can bring in this way. Initial advertisers include Virgin America, Best Buy, Sony Pictures and Starbucks.

TAKING TIME: The ads are coming gradually, beginning Tuesday and increasing in frequency throughout the week. Twitter users would see the new ads when they search broadly for topics being tweeted about.
