Wisconsin AG sues Verizon over billing

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against telephone carrier Verizon.

The lawsuit filed Friday in Dane County Circuit Court alleges that Verizon wrongly billed people for services that were actually ordered through Powercom Corp., which is not related to Verizon.

Both Verizon Long Distance LLC and Verizon North Inc. are named in the lawsuit. Powercom, which was based out of Beaver Dam, has since been purchased by New Jersey-based Lambeau Telecom Co.

The complaint seeks an injunction to stop the improper billings, payment of fines up to $10,000 for each law violation and an unspecified amount in restitution for the affected customers.

An attorney for Verizon did not immediately respond to a message for comment.
