Recalls this week: cribs, fitness benches, ATVs
NEW YORK — Among the recalled items this week are cribs whose mattress supports can collapse. The cribs were cited in the death of a 1-year-old. A second crib recall involves the potential for the drop side hardware to fail, allowing the side to detach.
Also recalled: fitness benches that pose a fall hazard; all terrain vehicles with steering column support that can crack; and laptop power adaptors with faulty wiring that can cause burns are also on the list.
Here are the recalled items this week:
_________
SIMPLICITY CRIBS
DETAILS: Simplicity and its successor company, SFCA Inc., are no longer in business, which leaves the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission with limited information about the full-size cribs recalled. Both fixed-side and drop-side cribs made with tubular metal mattress support frames are involved, including all models made under the Simplicity or Simplicity for Children brands with that type of frame, along with models made under the Aspen, Chelsea Deluxe and Graco brands. They were made in China for Simplicity of Reading, Pa., and sold at Walmart stores, Target, Babies R Us and other stores nationwide for between $150 and $300.
WHY: The cribs’ tubular metal mattress support frame can bend or come apart, and cause part of the mattress to collapse. That creates a space into which an infant or toddler can become wedged, trapped or fall out of the crib.
INCIDENTS: CPSC has received a report of a 1-year-old child from North Attleboro, Mass., who suffocated when he became trapped between the crib mattress and the crib frame in April 2008. The agency is aware of 13 other incidents.
HOW MANY: Unknown

_________
GRACO CRIBS
DETAILS: Full size Graco brand drop-side cribs made by LaJobi Inc. of Cranbury, N.J. The wooden cribs were sold in cherry, espresso, natural and white finishes under several model names. They were made in China and Vietnam and sold at children’s product stores and other retailers nationwide from February 2007 to March 2010, for between $140 and $200.
WHY: The drop-side hardware can break or fail, allowing the side to detach from the crib. That creates a gap between the drop side and the crib mattress where infants can become wedged or trapped and suffocate. Children can also fall from the cribs when the drop side detaches or fails to lock.
INCIDENTS: A total of 99 reports, including two in which children were trapped and freed by caregivers. There were six reports of children falling because the drop side failed, including one that resulted in a concussion.
HOW MANY: About 217,000

_________
LAPTOP POWER ADAPTERS
DETAILS: Seven models of Targus universal wall power adapters for laptops, made in China for Comarco Inc. of Lake Forest, Calif., were recalled. The adapters were sold at major retailers nationwide and online from June 2009 through last month. They cost between $89 and $109 for adapters for wall outlets only; and between $129 and $149 for adapters also usable in cars and airplanes.
WHY: The adapters have faulty wiring can cause the connector tips to heat and melt their plastic casings. That creates a burn hazard.
INCIDENTS: There have been 518 reported incidents of the connector tips heating. Eight consumers reported minor burns on their fingers or hands.
HOW MANY: About 507,000

The Nordic Track Revitalize, Gold’s Gym, and Weider Club inversion benches were sold at sporting good stores, Walmart, Sears and other retailers nationwide from April 2008 through February 2009 for between $200 and $300.
WHY: The ankle clamp can release unexpectedly, or the strap used to limit rotation can break, posing a fall hazard.
INCIDENTS: There are 75 reports of incidents involving the strap breaking or the ankle clamp releasing, including 23 injuries, some of which were to the head and neck.
HOW MANY: About 33,000

The black or red devices, with “OMS” printed on the inside front, were sold at dive stores nationwide from May 2006 through August 2008 for about $400.
