Summary Box: Apple takes gulp of glossy material
NEW YORK — THE DEAL: Liquidmetal Technologies Inc., a Caltech spinoff, has granted Apple Inc. a perpetual, exclusive license to use its technology in consumer electronics.
STRONG AND GLOSSY: Liquidmetal can be cast precisely for a glossy finish and resists denting, scratching and scuffing. Although Apple isn’t saying anything, the deal could give the company shiny, super-tough computer and phone casings.
THE CAVEAT: It’s expensive, used mostly in luxury goods and certain products for now.
