Google revealed Google Voice, a new smartphone service for iPhone in order to sidetrack Apple’s Gatekeeper and to make Voice very popular. The new service allows user to make cheap long distance call using iPhone and to forward calls from a single phone to multiple phones. Google Voice can only be accessed through smartphone’s Web Browser. The new version of Voice is available for iPhone 3.0 and higher and Palm Inc Web OS smartphones.
People can already access Google Voice through Mobile Web Browser. But, the new version is a Web Apps which is more interactive than browser based application. You can listen to voice mails directly from within the browser and to dial phone numbers on an interactive on-screen keypad.
Google said that Apple rejected a proposal from Google in July to offer Voice as a native application for iphone. Eventually, US Federal Communications intervened and asked more information from the companies. The disagreement between the companies rises as Google launched its Smartphone Nexus earlier this month and at the same time, they are developing an Operating system that can compete with Mac PCs.
The company further said that they didn’t hear anything from Apple regarding native app version of Google Voice on the iPhone.

Instead GV now puts up a dialog box with some unfamiliar number to connect the cellphone to and thus place the outbound call. If that number remains constant I can live with it by putting *that* number in my list…but why didn’t GV just keep the functionality the same? Hopefully someone will post if: Thanks |
