Not Satisfied With Web, Google To Start Boring Earth
By Angsuman Chakraborty, Gaea News NetworkWednesday, August 20, 2008
Google has decided that boring (into) the World Wide Web is not enough and it plans to start drilling into the earth’s crust.
Google promised nearly $11 million in technology to expand USA’s geothermal energy reserves. Google is interested in Enhanced Geothermal Systems which involves drilling deep underground to fracture “hot rocks” and then pump them with water to create steam that can be used in a power plant.
Geo-thermal energy can meet USA’s annual consumption many times over. Google has also invested in solar power plant companies BrightSource Energy and eSolar as well as in high-altitude wind company Makani.

I wonder what happens when we significantly cool off the earth’s core by geo-thermal mining…
