Summary Box: Google Buzz faces privacy complaint
WHAT KIND OF COMPLAINT: A privacy watchdog group has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission saying that Google’s new Buzz social networking service violates federal consumer protection law.
WHAT THE COMPLAINT SAYS: The group argues that Buzz raises privacy concerns because Google automatically signs up Gmail users for Buzz, rather than waiting for them to do so themselves, or “opt in” for the service.
WHAT GOOGLE SAYS: Google insists that it gives users control because, even though it adds a “Buzz” link to all Gmail accounts, users must click on the link and agree to activate the service.
