Why does my Google Desktop search contact internet?

Occassionally Google Desktop Search contacts internet, even when I am not using it.

This makes me nervous. It feels intrusive to have something which can view and possibly ( not that I would doubt Google of commiting such an act… or would I?) send critical financial information out of the computer.
I have blocked google from directly accessing the internet using firewall. However it may still piggy-back on other services to access the internet.
I have stopped using Google Desktop for sometime now.
Call me a paranoid..but then only the paranoid survive.

I will be looking at Copernic.

Quite Creepy, aside from being a resource hog. Also insists on being installed in the system drive (C:\ or what-have-you)
Until beagle(beagle-project.org) catches up, I’m using Regain(regain.sourceforge.net)
