Unrest in Googleplex

In a rather sad story a Googler (Google employee) narrates his misery with paltry salary and poor chance of a raise.
Apparently in Google you can get a raise (merely 5-8%) with only a promotion. You shouldn’t expect promotions more than once every 18 months (and what’s normal is more like once every 24 or 30 months).
Interestingly no one can tell you what it takes to get promoted. The conventional wisdom is “launch lots of cool products,” but no one can tell you what it takes to get a product launch OK’d by all the requisite gatekeepers.
Combine that with “you find that most people around here think their salaries are awful”.

What a paradox!
I understand this story may be an exception or even exaggeration, “Weep for the penniless Google employee! After buying his estate in the country, he needs three promotions before he can build servants’ quarters.”.
However recent events shows Google is apparently turning very much into an evil corporation that it used to shun in its early days. It appears all is not happy and well in Googleville anymore.

But looking at those repriced stock options while they vest must be pretty sweet, eh? Not sure what in any of this qualifies as good or evil. Is there something that everyone is entitled to in terms of raises or a number of servants? |
